Grinding Machine - Types & How it works

18 Sep.,2023

A grinding machine is a machine tool with an abrasive wheel that is used to achieve fine finishes or light cuts on metals and other materials. It is a machining operation that is used to improve the accuracy of a product that has previously been machined.

Grinding is used to finish workpieces that need a high level of surface quality and accurate form and dimension and removes relatively little metal, roughly 0.25 to 0.50 mm depth. Grinding machines come in a variety of shapes and sizes with various types of grinder wheels. Their wheels are constructed of numerous stones, diamonds, and other inorganic materials and vary in size and texture.

Types of Grinding Machines

Surface Grinder

These kinds of grinders are used to grind flat surfaces precisely. An abrasive wheel, a chuck, and a horizontally swiveling table are the key components of a surface grinder. The chuck holds the workpiece in place, which is then fed towards the grinding wheel by the table. Further, there are various types of surface grinding machines like creep feed grinding machines, spindle reciprocating table grinders, and spindle rotary table grinders.

The base, bed, headstock, tailstock, work table, and grinding wheel are the essential components of this grinder. The workpiece is secured to the headstock’s Chuck. When Chuck turns the piece, it rotates as well. The grinding wheel placed alongside the headstock is pushed towards the workpiece using either hand or power.

CNC machines employ tool and cutter grinders because they have many grinding wheel axes, eliminating the need to change the grinding wheel for each operation. Using these grinders, cutting tools such as milling cutters, drills, end mills, and step tools are sharpened and manufactured. It’s popular in the metal-cutting and woodworking industries.

5-Axis Tool and Cutter Grinder

A 5-axis grinding machine is a cutter grinder commonly used to shape and sharpen milling cutters and other tool bits. 5-axis tool grinders can perform a broad range of grinding operations, including surface grinding, cylindrical grindingcylindrical grinding, and complicated shape shaping, using a set of grinding tools.

A wide variety of tools, such as gun drilling tools, hob cutters, standard grinding wheels, and other micro or complicated tools, can be added to a 5-axis CNC grinding machine to cut quickly and accurately, generating endless unique profiles.

CNC Precision Cylindrical Pinch /Peel Grinder

A CNC cylindrical grinder, also known as a CNC Cylindrical Grinding machine, is a precision grinder that is often used to remove materials from metal objects in order to form the exterior profile through the pinch or peel process. This grinding process, also known as abrasive cutting, involves shearing the surfaces of rotating metal components with various abrasive wheels. In a CNC cylindrical grinder machine, the workpieces are usually put on the central axis and cut into a range of shapes.

Double Column Surface Grinder

The double column surface grinders are designed for the high-precision grinding of huge components. They have a slant beam design that distributes loads evenly over the whole beam surface, ensuring optimal stability during severe grinding. It provides both high precision and outstanding efficiency for demanding mould and die base manufacturing applications.
