Synthesis Method Details
Design of the Synthesis Pathway
The synthesis of 2-Bromo-1-phenyl-pentan-1-one can be achieved by the bromination of 1-phenyl-pentan-1-one.
Starting Materials
1-phenyl-pentan-1-one, bromine, acetic acid, sodium acetate, water
Reaction
Step 1: Dissolve 1-phenyl-pentan-1-one (1.0 mol) in acetic acid (50 mL) in a round-bottom flask.
Step 2: Add bromine (1.5 mol) slowly with stirring at room temperature.
Step 3: Add sodium acetate (2.0 mol) to the reaction mixture and stir for 1 hour.
Step 4: Pour the reaction mixture into water (100 mL) and extract with diethyl ether (3 x 50 mL).
Step 5: Dry the organic layer with anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporate the solvent under reduced pressure.
Step 6: Purify the crude product by column chromatography using a suitable solvent system to obtain 2-Bromo-1-phenyl-pentan-1-one as a white solid.
