Drymix Mortar Application Guide

06 Jan.,2024

Masons typically use a mixture of sand, binder, and water to create the mortar. Lime, lime mortar, and plaster in the form of cooked gypsum are particularly used to restore and reposition historic buildings and structures so that the restoration material resembles the original material in performance and appearance. Several types of cement mortars and additives exist.

The opening time of building mortar refers to the ability of the mortar to maintain its initial workability for a certain period of time after mixing, even if it is applied to a porous (high water absorption) base surface. Products with good water retention lose very little water, and this small part of the water is also absorbed by the base surface.

Construction mortars include plastering mortar, masonry mortar, tile adhesive, grout, and floor mortar. When applied to the base surface with high water absorption, good water retention is very important for building mortar.

The key dry mix applications

Dry mortar mixtures are used in many different applications in the construction of a building. Some of these applications are universal and some others are specific to certain regions or countries.

a. Cement-based tile adhesives

b. Renders and plasters based on gypsum or cement

c. External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS)

d. Tile grouts

e. Self-leveling underlayments and screeds

f. Repair mortars

g. Brick-laying masonry mortars

h. Cementitious waterproofing

How to make mortar mix?

When making tile with a mortar mix, choose a thin mortar, also known as dry mortar, dry adhesive mortar, or simply "thin mortar". The mortar forms a strong adhesive in a thin layer, making it the best choice for tiles. Mixing thinset is comparable to mixing standard mortar.

The amount of water and mix required for the job is determined by the manufacturer's recommendations. The standard mortar mixing ratio is one part mixed with four parts water.

Pour the water into the mixing container.

Add the mixture to the container.

Stir for approximately five minutes.

Allow the thin mixture to stand for 10 minutes.

Stir for another five minutes to check the consistency. If the tile mortar mixture has a peanut butter appearance and is of sufficient thickness, it is ready for use.

EIFS adhesive mortar

• Bond strength: Choose the right HPMC that could provide the greatest bond strength of mortar.

• Good workability: HPMC has a good consistency, the non-sagging property could make the work easier during the use of the distribution method.

• Water retention: HPMC has good water retention, make sure all other additives can also reach the best performance.

EIFS surface mortar

• Bigger scrape area: The good film property and the suitable viscosity, choose right grade HPMC make the wet mortar more smooth and easy to scrape on the surface, the same weight of wet mortar can cover a bigger area.

• Anti-cracking: Choose the right specification of HPMC, The excellent property can make sure all other additives in mortar could reach the best performance, reduce the crack on the surface.

• Stability: HPMC has good stability in a hot environment, keep good water retention even in high temperature.
