How plywood became cool again

Plywood has come a long way from its humble status in school woodwork lessons and garden sheds. This classic building material, made from veneers of wood sandwiched together with glue, is having a big design and architecture moment.

The architect Daniel Gray, founder of the Brighton-based practice Studio Twenty Six, highlights Plywood: Material of the Modern World, the V&A’s 2017 groundbreaking exhibition featuring pieces by Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer and Charles and Ray Eames.

“Plywood has such an interesting history,” he says. “During the Second World War in California, where much of America’s wartime production was based, the Eameses developed new ways of moulding plywood while making lightweight leg splints for US navy servicemen, and later went on to make plywood parts for aircraft.
