How to clean perforated aluminum

Perforated aluminum is a top seller for many types of projects, and for good reason. It is lightweight but strong, durable and easy to perforate. While aluminum is very resistant to corrosion, it does require a little attention to keep its good looks.
When you want to clean perforated aluminum, the first step is to determine the finish - usually an anodized or powder-coated finish - because the finish will determine what you can do if you're dealing with stubborn stains.

 

 

Step-by-step cleaning

For anodized and powder coated aluminum, most everyday stains can be removed by simply cleaning with warm water and a mild PH neutral detergent (if necessary), as follows.
Rinse the metal with water to remove surface dirt
Using a damp, non-abrasive sponge or cloth soaked in a solution of water or detergent, gently wipe to remove any deposits.
Rinse thoroughly to remove soap and dirt residue.
For any deposits that will not move, what you can use depends on the finish.
If powder coated, the only two products recommended by the powder coating manufacturer are methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol, then rinse thoroughly.
If anodized, white spirit may help remove the dirt, then rinse thoroughly again and dry with a non-abrasive soft cloth. You can also use a special cleaning product.
In all cases, it is important not to use anything that could damage the painted or anodized coating on the aluminum, such as harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scrubbing sponges. If you are unsure, it is best to get advice first when dealing with difficult to remove stains.

 

 

How often should I clean?

How often you need to clean perforated aluminum panels depends on the local environment. For example, metal installed in coastal areas is subject to high concentrations of salt contaminants and therefore needs to be cleaned more frequently.
Rainfall can also affect your cleaning schedule. If you are in a drier climate, surface debris that would normally be washed away by natural rainfall will not be removed, and the metal will need to be cleaned regularly.
In general, however, for low contamination areas, inspect and clean the metal at least once every 12 months. In areas with high levels of contamination, this may need to be done every six months, and in very high industrial or marine locations, every three months.
