Most 2 stage reciprocating compressors are designed to operate up to a maximum of 175 psi. Most rotary screw compressors are designed to operate efficiently between 90 and 125 psi. Some applications require high volumes of compressed air in the range of 45 to 60 psi. A rotary screw compressor designed for operation in this range will use a smaller motor and consume less power than a machine designed for operation at a higher pressure. Special construction is required for satisfactory operation in this range. Some applications require compressed air at 200 psi but are constrained by space, noise or cost considerations to use a modified rotary screw compressor rather than a reciprocating compressor .
