Shanxi’s Q1 Power Consumption Rises 6.1%, Driven by High-Tech Manufacturing and Service Sectors

Shanxi Province consumed 80.69 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first quarter of 2025, a 6.1% increase year-on-year, according to data from the provincial statistics bureau.

Shanxi Province consumed 80.69 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first quarter of 2025, a 6.1% increase year-on-year, according to data from the provincial statistics bureau.

Electricity usage rose across all sectors. The primary sector consumed 740 million kWh, up 10.21%; the secondary sector reached 56.44 billion kWh, an increase of 4.89%; and the tertiary sector used 12.88 billion kWh, up 11.82%. Residential electricity use also grew, rising 6.01% to 10.63 billion kWh.

Industrial power demand was notably boosted by high-end manufacturing. Electricity use in electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing surged by 380.3%, contributing 1.1 percentage points to the province’s overall industrial power growth. Within this category, photovoltaic equipment manufacturing saw an explosive 720.4% increase.

Other fast-growing segments included medical device manufacturing (up 51.1%), precision instruments (20.8%), and new energy vehicle production (18.8%). Power consumption in the non-metallic mineral products industry rose 23.3%, contributing an additional 1.02 percentage points to industrial growth.

In the services sector, the rise of electric vehicles drove an 83.1% jump in electricity use for charging and battery-swapping services. Data centers and cloud services also continued to expand rapidly, with power consumption up 43.2%. As tourism rebounded, electricity use in travel-related businesses climbed 16.8%.
