Zhejiang Province has imported more than 57.13 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from other regions so far this year, according to State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd.—marking a major milestone in cross-provincial power trading.

As one of China’s most economically dynamic regions, yet lacking in natural energy resources, Zhejiang is increasingly reliant on electricity imports to meet its surging demand. In the first quarter of 2025, the province’s total power consumption reached 152.7 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 5.54%. By the end of the year, peak electricity demand is expected to hit 130 gigawatts, with annual consumption projected to exceed 720 billion kWh. A significant portion of this will be supplied from outside the province.

Interprovincial electricity trading has become a key mechanism for securing this external supply. Zhejiang has built a robust ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission backbone, consisting of two alternating-current and four direct-current lines. Among these, three major west-to-east UHV projects have played a critical role, delivering 21.45 billion kWh in the first quarter alone—up 14.4% from a year earlier—helping to stabilize the province’s power grid.

Looking ahead to the summer peak season, Zhejiang plans to import up to 40.5 gigawatts of electricity from other regions, 1.5 gigawatts more than last year. The province is also accelerating its green energy transition: by 2025, renewable energy is expected to account for 36.5% of total imported electricity, underscoring Zhejiang’s efforts to decarbonize its power supply while ensuring energy security.
